I have tested positive for Thyroid Antibodies---What does it mean?If you have tested positive for thyroid antibodies and still have normal TSH, it usually means that your thyroid gland is in the earlier stages of autoimmune thyroid disease and will be testing positive for TSH levels also, very soon. Just see it as a warning signal for autoimmune thyroid disease (also known as Hashimoto’s thyroid disease) Usually doctors don’t start treatment, or give any medication to persons who have thyroid antibodies, even though they maybe showing all the symptoms of thyroid and experiencing a lot of discomfort. Maybe, they are waiting for your thyroid glands to completely fail before they start treatment or maybe they are not updating their knowledge. A new study reported in the March 2001 issue of the Thyroid Journal, has shown that the treatment of patients, who have Hashimoto's thyroiditis but normal range of TSH levels, with levothyroxine treatment could reduce the incidence and degree of autoimmune disease progression. So, if you are someone who has tested positive for thyroid antibodies and yet have normal TSH results, then maybe the doctors wont start your treatment. So, instead of waiting for you disease to progress enough to show on the TSH tests, you could either go to a holistic M.D. or a few endocrinologists who are knowledgeable enough to start your treatment.
