Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer occurs due to the
uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the thyroid gland, causing a tumor.
Some of these tumors are benign while the others are malignant or cancerous. The
malignant tumors spread to the nearby tissues and other parts of the body
causing severe complications.
The thyroid gland being close to the skin causes tumors to appear as lumps,
which are called thyroid nodules and occur in the neck.
Thyroid cancer is a very common and widespread disease, occurring more
frequently among women than men; however, the reason for this is not clear.
About 20,000 cases of thyroid cancer are reported each year in the United
States.
-
Papillary Thyroid Cancer--This is the most common type
of thyroid cancer in America, but not worldwide. It occurs more frequently in
women and presents in the 30-40 year age group. It is also the predominant
cancer type in children with thyroid cancer, and in patients with thyroid
cancer who have had previous radiation to the head and neck (in this group
-
Follicular Thyroid Cancer-- This occurs more commonly
in women of over 50 years old.
-
Medullary Thyroid Cancer-- medullary cancer of the
thyroid originates from the parafollicular cells (also called C cells) of the
thyroid.
-
Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer-- This form of thyroid cancer
has a very poor prognosis (near 100% mortality) due to its aggressive behavior
and resistance to cancer treatments. It rapidly invades surrounding tissues
Now you know the types of thyroid
cancer. But,how do you find out if you are developing Thyroid Cancer. In most
cases, there are no signs and symptoms in the early stages of thyroid cancer.
But, as the cancer grows, a few symptoms might arise.
Here are a few of the Signs and Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer:
-
A lump starts growing in the front of your neck, just below
your Adam's apple
-
There is hoarseness in your voice and you may even have
difficulty swallowing
-
Trouble breathing
-
Swollen lymph nodes start developing, especially in your neck
-

conditions — including a benign thyroid nodule, an infection or inflammation of
the thyroid gland, and a benign enlargement of the thyroid can also cause
