 Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease

There are many different names you might find for the eye disorders arising due to thyroid disease

A few of these names are:

  • Thyroid Eye Disease, also known as TED

  • Thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO)

  • Grave's orbitopathy

Thyroid disorders cause dry eyes in a lot of people. When a person is suffering from dry eyes, the amount of tears being produced by his eyes is vastly reduced and his eyes start to feel very dry. Although it is called dry eyes, sometimes the eyes also produce an abnormally high amount of tears. A person treats dry eyes using artificial tears to lubricate his eyes which provides comfort for the eyes and prevents them from being damaged
Sometimes the thyroid disorder causes thyroid orbitopathy , where the eye muscles are no longer able to control the movement of the eyes and thus leads to double vision and difficulty in reading.

Causes of Thyroid Eye Disease

When an auto-immune attack starts on the thyroid, the antibodies which attack the thyroid, also start attacking the eye tissues. This is because, thyroid disease is an auto-immune disease, in which more than one organ may be attacked, and in most of the cases, it is the thyroid and eyes which are attacked.

Symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease

  • The eyelids become swollen and reddish.

  • The muscles and fat which surrounds the eye, swells and pushes the eyes forward giving a bulging appearance to the eyes.

  • The eye muscles lose the ability to control eye movements causing double vision or diplopia.

  • Bloodshot or reddish veins in eyes

  • The amount of tears being produced by the eyes gets reduced, causing dry eyes.

Treatments for Thyroid Eye Disease range from using eyedrops or ointments for lubrication to, in very rare cases, surgery.

Surgery becomes necessary when the eye disease becomes really severe:

  • in the case of orbital decompression,

  • for the muscles of the eye in case of double vision,

  • and to correct the lid position.

A doctor needs to be careful and wait for the active phase of the thyroid disease to be over before surgery is performed. A low dose radiotherapy is given by a few opthalmologists as they believe that it can improve results after the active phase is over. In Cases where the condition is not so severe, then surgery is not required and an eye professional could help by providing lenses with special prisms to help with the double vision and recommend artificial tears for dry eyes.
