Thyroid Medication --- Frequently Asked QuestionsQuestion:- The person at the pharmacy
was giving me a generic substitution for my thyroid hormone. Should I accept it?
Question: Is it really necessary to
take thyroid hormones in the morning or on an empty stomach? What happens if I
don’t do that? A new research report (in the journal of Clinical Endocrinology) shows that taking the same dosage of levothyroxine at bedtime, rather than in the morning, gave better results and had a greater effect on the thyroid hormone profile of the patients. Some doctors even suggest splitting dosages throughout the day and leave on dose for bedtime too. This approach usually shows improved results and the patients feel better too. If you do make a change to how you take your thyroid medication, then please get your blood levels reevaluated and notice your symptoms, to determine if you need to adjust the dosages or timings of your medications again. Question: Can I have a high fiber
diet while taking thyroid medications? Now high fiber diets do speed up the digestion process and may inhibit the absorption process but the benefits of a high fiber diet far outweigh the disadvantages. What you need to do is to be consistent about the high-fiber diet. Don’t keep making changes to your diet because it may change the absorption levels of the thyroid medications. A Few other things that you should know when taking your thyroid medications:There must be a gap of two to three hours between taking your vitamins and iron supplements and taking your thyroid medicines. These supplements could interfere with your thyroid hormone absorption if the gap is less. Don't take antacids within two hours of thyroid hormone. Allow at least 2-3 hours apart, so absorption is not affected. If you are taking any antidepressants, it could have an effect on the absorption rate. You should talk to your doctor before you continue taking these medicines. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, then please don’t stop your thyroid medicines. You should talk to your doctor about it and figure out the right dosage for you. Some of the thyroid conditions are autoimmune in nature and frequently appear during stressful periods, such as death of a spouse, divorce, etc. and the thyroid symptoms during these periods may be said to be caused due to stress.
