How to Interpret Thyroid Tests
If you can, get a hard copy printout for
your own review and home medical files.
If "normal" or "reference" ranges are not indicated on the lab results, ask your
doctor's office to tell you what these ranges are.
Note the level of your Thyroid
Stimulating Hormone (TSH). For most labs in the U.S., the normal range
was from around 0.5 to 5.5, up until late 2002. That range has now been changed
to .3 to 3.
If the TSH level is below normal, then you maybe hyperthyroid (overactive
thyroid.)
If the TSH level is above normal, then you maybe hypothyroid (underactive
thyroid.)
The normal range for the Total T4 or
Total Thyroxine test is approximately 4.5 to 12.5.
If you had a low reading in the Total T4 test, and a high TSH, it
might be indicative of hypothyroidism.
If you had a low reading in the Total T4 test, and a low TSH, it
might be a pituitary problem.
The normal range for the Free T4, or
Free Thyroxine test is approximately 0.7 to 2.0.
Getting a result less than 0.7 might indicate hypothyroidism.
The normal range for the Total T3 test is approximately 80 to 220.
Getting a result less than 80, might indicate hypothyroidism.
Normal range for the Free T3 test is approximately 2.3 to 4.2.
Getting a result less than 2.3, might indicate hypothyroidism.
Sometimes it may also happen that your
test results come back "normal" but you are showing the symptoms
for thyroid disease, then ask for an antibodies test as some doctors believe in
treating thyroid symptoms in the presence of elevated antibodies and normal TSH
levels.
Another alternative, when you are getting normal results and still showing
symptoms for thyroid disease, would be to go to a reputable holistic M.D. or
alternative physician for further interpretation and diagnosis
