Thyroid Uptake and Scan
A Thyroid Scan shows the size, shape and
location of your thyroid gland while the thyroid uptake measures the thyroid
function.
Thyroid Uptake Scan Procedure
This is actually a 2-day procedure. The
Thyroid Scan takes place on the first day. You will be asked questions regarding
any prior tests, medication and the symptoms of thyroid problems.
You will be given a dose of a radiotracer (iodine or technetium). They may
either tell you to swallow it or inject it into a vein. The Iodine tracer, which
is supposed to be swallowed, is either in liquid or capsule form and may be
taken up to 24 hours before the test. The technetium tracer is injected into the
vein 30 minutes before the test. When the procedure begins, you will have to lie
down on a table while a gamma camera will take a series of images of the thyroid
gland.
The Thyroid Uptake will be performed on
the second day. You will be asked to swallow radioactive Iodine in liquid or
capsule form and then the uptake will be scheduled several hours later. During
the thyroid uptake, you will have to sit in a chair while a probe is placed over
the thyroid gland in the neck. This small probe is capable of detecting and
measuring the gamma rays emitted from the radiotracer that has accumulated in
the thyroid gland.
What Happens after the Exam?
After the exam, the images taken will be
processed using a computer. A Radiologist will then evaluate the images and
dictate a report. The report will be sent to your physician who will give you
the results.
